Happy New Year! 2024 ended in a flurry of activity and excitement and we can’t wait to get back to work. Last year we pushed ourselves to take on new opportunities. We launched two new pre-design services (which have already helped a number of people start their sustainable home journey), we brought our sustainability expertise to the design of an exciting commercial fit-out (an area we’re keen to keep exploring as a firm), and we took on new challenges in our personal lives. And we’re just getting started! In 2025 we’ll have builds wrapping up on site, a new office to call home, beautifully photographed sustainable projects to share with you, and great new homes to design. We will continue trying new things, developing our unique services and seeking out exciting opportunities - let us know if you have any we can work on with you! So, in the spirit of doing new things, we wanted to use our first newsletter of the year to speak candidly to you about an uncomfortable topic: the cost of construction. This is something that invariably affects our work and can cause great amounts of anxiety due to its ambiguous nature. But amidst the uncertainty and unpredictability of it all, there is one constant. The cost of building never goes down. In fact, it is always going up. Sometimes it goes up slowly, sometimes it goes up quickly, but it’s always trending up. So just like planting a tree, the best time to build your dream house was 30 years ago, and the second best time is now. This is why we’ve spent the last few years developing a robust service that can help our clients balance their project goals with budget constraints. We’ve become experts at identifying the core needs at the heart of a project and therefore achieving successful, beautiful and sustainable outcomes through creative and nuanced design solutions. We work as a team with builders and cost planners to make sure our clients are making informed decisions around cost at every stage of the project, allowing them to move forward with confidence.
