Carbon Neutral

Carbon Neutral Architects

We’re incredibly proud to be a carbon neutral certified company.

As architects, we recognise that the construction industry is one of the biggest contributors to global CO2 emissions. In acknowledging this, we believe that we not only have an increased responsibility to operate in a sustainable manner, but also have an opportunity to create a lasting impact by setting an example and generating conversation throughout the industry.

Our effort to become carbon neutral has been a huge step for us in realising our values and giving us the confidence that we are taking responsibility for our actions.

Measure

We spent several months working hard to audit and quantify our carbon consumption as a firm. Pangolin Associates helped us measure everything - from the carbon produced driving our cars, right down to the amount of paper we use. This was a long and thorough process that really made us consider all the ways we contribute to carbon emissions - no matter how incidental.

Reduce

Possibly the most important step in this process is for us to continually identify and act on all the ways we could reduce our carbon emissions. This ongoing commitment means we’re always looking for ways to further reduce our emissions. One of the most significant adjustments we made as a firm was becoming conscious of reducing the carbon emissions on our daily commutes, and in particular only driving to work when it is necessary to do so.

Offset

The final step is to offset every unavoidable bit of carbon we use. We do this by financially investing in carbon removal projects, in direct proportion to the amount of carbon we emit as determined by the carbon audit process certified by Pangolin Associates. A carbon removal project will seek to capture carbon either naturally, through the planting of trees or the restoration of land, or through carbon-capture technology. This year we invested in the Jari/Amapá REDD+ Project in Brazil. This Project aims to protect a significant area of forest in the Brazilian Amazon while helping to educate local residents on more sustainable practices.

Projects we’ve invested in:

Jari/Amapá REDD+ Project

It is no secret that the Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest, is under serious threat. In Brazil in 2020, an average of 3,795 hectares were lost to deforestation every day. That’s 24 trees every second. This continued trend is rapidly turning one of the world’s biggest carbon capturing mechanisms into one of its biggest carbon polluters. This kind of action is exactly what the Jari/Amapá REDD+ Project is trying to prevent.

By investing, we are helping the team behind the Jari/Amapá REDD+ Project to protect the forest in the Jari Valley, Brazil. This involves preventing deforestation, degradation, and supporting the local residents to implement sustainable practices.
